declaration

Legal context

In Belgium, the installation of surveillance cameras is regulated by the Camera Law of March 21, 2007. This legislation aims to protect privacy while allowing the use of video surveillance in public and private places.

What type of camera?

  • Fixed cameras installed in places accessible to the public (shops, restaurants, parking lots, etc.).
  • Mobile cameras used during events or by security services.
  • Private cameras facing public spaces (e.g., a camera on the front of a building filming the street).

How ?

All camera installations must be declared before they are put into service. This declaration is made electronically via the official website www.declarationcamera.be. Several essential pieces of information must be provided:

  • the identity and contact details of the data controller
  • the address of the location being monitored
  • the type of camera installed (whether it is a fixed, mobile, or temporary device)
  • the purpose of the surveillance
